The flower of clematis 'Romantika' matures as it ages starting out as an almost black colour when first opening, maturing to the darkest deep purple. In the centre a crown of stunning bright yellow to cream anthers make it stand out very nicely, whether growing on an obelisk or trellis or at the back of a garden border.

'Romantika' is just one of many superb clematis bred by Uno Kivistik of Estonia. Raised in 1983 as a seedling it was not available to many gardeners until the 'Iron Curtain' was lifted in 1989 and trade with the Eastern European nations became easier. 'Romantika' is classed as a Jackmanii clematis and displays many of the Jackmanii characteristics, of strong growth and fast growth rate, very dark flower colour and long flowering season.

In our experience 'Romantika' is best grown as a companion plant a habitat in which it thrives. Our plant at Thorncroft grew through a philadelphus (Mock Orange) and looked superb from early summer to autumn.

Pruning is best carried out in the mid spring each year, cutting all the stems down to around 12-18 inches from the soil, just above a new shoot. If you like to tidy the garden for winter, you can prune it back to around 3 feet in the late autumn once it is dormant to tidy it up but avoid cutting it too short particularly in harsher climates. During a growing year you will get around 6-8 feet of growth and a long period of flower from June to September.
