Cultivation Information

Clematis florida 'Abla Plena' has pretty double flowers of greeny-cream, rosette-like blooms, and is also known as florida 'Plena', or florida var. flore-pleno.
An unstable variety where the blooms can occasionally revert to clematis Sieboldiana.

Cultivation Advice

I would recommend growing florida clematis in large pots because they perform very well and they make a stunning display on a patio. Stand the container on the patio from late February to early October and then move it into a sheltered corner or cold glasshouse to over-winter. They will not need heated conditions during the winter, just shelter and if taking them undercover they will probably continue flowering.

In early March the previous seasons growth should be hard pruned down to approximately one foot (30cm) from the soil level and a fresh top-dressing of compost and bonemeal can be applied to the container. Use Westland Gro-Sure Slow Release Plant Food for consistent feeding through the year.

Avoid keeping the floridas too wet over the winter, on the other hand they must not be allowed to dry out completely. Always ensure the pot drains freely and each year harden the plants off during late March as described in the Planting & Care Guide.

When planting florida clematis in the garden they will require the shelter of a south or south west facing wall, with good free draining soil. A sheet of bubble plastic or a double layer of garden fleece draped across and pegged into position will keep the worst of the winter weather at bay. This protection can be removed during early March so that hard pruning can be carried out, then feed with a single handful of bonemeal and water it in. Replace the protection until the worst of the weather has passed.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

Excellent plant and service

This clematis wasn’t in stock when I was looking for it. Ask them to let me know when they would have it in, which they did.
Ordered it and was kept informed from the time they were picking it to the time they dispatched it.
Delivered really well boxed, and the clematis was really healthy and supported inside the box. A well informed leaflet enclosed with it telling you how to plant, feed , prune etc.
I would definitely recommend Thorncroftclematis with out any doubt.

Very healthy plants with good root systems and strong growth. Both even had flowers on. This is the third order I have had from Thorncroft and all have been outstanding quality. This order was bought for my daughter after I told her how good the plants I received were. She is as delighted as I am. Will definitely order aagin

Having bought several from Thorncroft over the recent year, I decided to give the patio a boost of colour and clematis in pots is always a good idea in my opinion.
I bought all five florida types from Thorncroft and they arrived in a variety of states, one cut back but shooting strongly, one in full flower and the other three somewhere in between.
Now 8 weeks on the flowering one Cassis is still going great guns and the others have all had flowers or are about to have flower and this is just the first year! When will we be able to post pictures please?!!

Beautiful, subtle with long lasting flowers

The above says it all really and when the outer petals fall, the central petals just carry on blooming. They eventually leave seed heads. It really earns it's place in my garden.
