Ground Cover

These clematis are wonderful plants for using as ground cover in the garden. Most of these are herbaceous as well so they are easy to care for and allow for easy maintenance each year and an opportunity to clear a bed or area of ground.
We include some 'climbing' varieties as well because they create a wonderful display when used as ground cover and because of their strong habit are easy to grow in this way. Remember that although these might be considered as 'climbers', in their natural habitat they only climb if they have a companion shrub or tree to scramble through, otherwise they would scramble on the open ground.

Keep in mind that the 'height' given for these plants should now be considered the 'length' of the stems they produce. Furthermore they never create such a long stem when scrambling around as when they grow upwards, so for example Abundance as a climber would make 9 foot of growth on average but as a scrambler will only make about 6 foot long stems.
