Cultivation Information

Little Lemons is an extraordinary new introduction from our friends at Jan van Zoest clematis nursery in The Netherlands.
Dainty yellow flowers are 1-1.5 inches across and produced in great abundance on short stems of 25-30cm. The flower leaves a wonderful glossy seedhead and it blooms semi-continuously from the late spring to early autumn.

Cultivation Advice

Little Lemons is an interesting little thing in that it shoots out very late in the spring and those shoots are produced the full length of the stems because they are so short.
I have practised cutting the stems at differing lengths with mixed results.

Cutting them to 2 buds from the crown - half the stems survived and shoots develop into stems
Cutting just the tips from the stems and leaving all budding areas intact - half the stems survived and shoots develop into stems
Cutting half and half - Most stems survived and shoots developed into stems.

So it seems a mixture of cutting some stems and leaving some was best.
The key with this variety is not allowing it to become too wet over the winter months and no need to plant it deeper into the new pot/ground.

In some countries these wonderful plants are considered to be invasive and problematic, however in the UK this is not the case, especially for this cultivar! The tangutica clematis are extremely useful in the garden, providing colour and interest from mid-summer through to late autumn, with most producing excellent seed-heads for added interest in the winter months.  They cope well with hot, sunny situations and are drought tolerant, even thriving in poorer conditions where you would think they would struggle. They will not tolerate very heavy clay soils that sit waterlogged, nor any over-watering.  Very easy to grow and low maintenance with simple pruning.
Avoid them becoming too excessively wet during their first autumn and winter in the ground or perhaps plant in the spring.
The tangutica can all be late to show new shoots and growth in the spring, so do not panic and think that they are dead, they are just having a lay in!
Lastly the tangutica do not require the deep planting that the large flowered clematis need, so planting at the same depth as they are in their pot is sufficient.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

I always use this nursery when buying clematis. The plants are a good size and always healthy. Lemon drops has not yet flowered as too early on the year but it was a good size pot and nicely presented and packaged. Looking forward to seeing it when in full bloom.

My second couple of Clematis from Thorncroft this year, and again thrilled with it! I didn‰Ûªt realise you could get such a low growing Clematis, so I bought it for my mum, a massive Clematis fan, and she is going to try it in a blue glazed pot like the one in the picture. Many thanks to Thorncroft, really pleased.
