Cultivation Information

Clematis terniflora has clusters of small white star-shaped flowers with a gorgeous hawthorn-like perfume, from which it gets its common name 'Sweet Autumn Clematis'.  Also known as clematis maximowicziana

Cultivation Advice.
This lovely group of scented clematis can make useful additions to our gardens. They produce literally hundreds of star-like flowers, which have a hawthorn-like perfume, attracting bees and butterflies to the garden.  Whilst these can be grown in any aspect, they will flower better, and the perfume will be stronger if grown in a sunny, free draining position.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

Let it grow up, and it becomes spectacular, and with magnificent white clusters; try it on a high tree, it will make clouds of colour; flowering time adds an extra value!

Flower power worth the wait
Rating:
28 July 2020  |

If you want to cover a fence fast this is for you. It's year 2 for mine and although it's a late flowerinf clematis its worth the wait. Still has masses of flowers in October.
Easy to keep in check as it's group 3 prune.
Only fault is the leaves on the lower stems die off early on so grow something tall in front to hide this.

Excellent service

Plants arrived in excellent condition and in the timeframe promised!

My congratulations on your excellent packaging, which provided complete protection - the plants arrived in perfect condition. I'm somewhat of a connoisseur of packaging for dispatch, having made my living as a maker of glass objects for forty years.

The driver commented that usually parcels have an indication as to which way should be up, and I replied that the handles sort of indicated the right way up. I report this simply because it wouldn't hurt to mark an arrow with a marker pen.
Friendly, courteous and efficient delivery - congratulations to Interlink!

Thank you also for the notes and information provided and appreciation of your expertise and experience in matters clematis.

Brilliant clematis

Beautiful scented scrambler..In its first year suffered from slug damage but I wove it up a nearby rose and now find that it's vigorous enough to hold its own. I cut it back hard in late winter. Keeps getting better!
