Cultivation Information

Trachelospermum jasminoides is a wonderful garden plant and often known simply as the Star Jasmine. This elegant climber has clusters of highly scented white flowers and shiny dark evergreen leaves is an understated but wonderful addition to any garden. Superb at screening unsightly objects it will also be at home, scrambling up into a supporting tree or shrub.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit

At Thorncroft Clematis we have always had a collection of other climbers for our customers to enjoy and we consider great garden performance to be the most important quality any plant should have.  Well you get that with Trachelospermum that's for sure!
An abundance of very dainty white star shaped flowers come out in around July, August and continue into early September and they have a strong sweet fragrance to fill your garden with scent.

Trachelospermum are are woody evergreen twining climber that originates from the woodlands of Japan, Korea and China.
They have a pretty dark green oval leaf and will climb and twine happily on most wall supports like trellis wire or netting.
In some southern areas of England the plant will stay evergreen whilst in more northerly regions, the leaves often turn a reddy-bronze during the colder winter months.
Trachelospermum jasminoides can be grown throughout the whole of the UK because it's from that select band of hardy evergreen climbers which will grow in sun or shade and on a great variety of supports including a pergola, archway or fences.

The best soil conditions would be fertile, well drained and improved with rotted organic matter like garden compost, or if growing in a large container (50cm diameter and depth minimum) pot with a loam-based potting compost like John Innes No.3.
The ultimate height will be between 10 and 15 feet assuming that you prune a little each autumn once the flowers have finished and it will take around 5 to 8 years to make this size.

Cultivation Advice.

Star jasmine is an attractive woody climber with glossy evergreen foliage and wonderfully fragrant summer flowers. It likes a warm, sunny, sheltered spot, and is ideal for clothing a south-facing wall, especially near a seating area or over a doorway, where its jasmine-scented flowers can be enjoyed to the full. In harsher climates it may need winter protection.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

I۪ve tried this numerous times from different growers and this is the first one to succeed in my garden. My mother had this on her study wall and I always wanted to replicate it at my home and now thanks to Thorncroft I have managed it.
