Cultivation Advice

Included in this group are those clematis commonly thought of as Viticella's, or viticella crosses. However we have taken the liberty to include some other cultivars in this group because their growth, habit and appearance is identical to that of the Viticella's. They include the likes of 'Blekitny Aniol''Polish Spirit' and 'Prince Charles' because of their similarities, and for ease of selection, we feel justified in placing them within this group.

They are all extremely hardy, very free flowering, their pruning is simple and they cannot be recommended highly enough. Especially useful for people new to growing clematis as they are extremely tolerant of what the gardener does to them! They all make excellent companions to grow with roses.

Tips for the Viticella.
These clematis prefer a good quality soil with high nutrient levels and a soil which is moist but free-draining. Improve planting holes with at least 2 forkfuls of well rotted manure or garden compost and if you don't have these use a 'Soil Improver' compost. The improvement material added should be placed under the root of the plant not around it. This encourages the roots to grow downwards and remain deep and cool during summer. There is no need to deadhead these clematis, however if they appear to have finished flowering earlier than you expected, there is no harm in giving them a light trim to encourage new growth and a secondary flowering late in the autumn.

About Our Plants

At Thorncroft the quality of our clematis plants is very important to us and we will not compromise on keeping up the high standards our customers have come to expect.

We supply plants mostly in a 3 litre container, growing on a 3 foot (1 meter) bamboo cane support, occasionally a 2 litre pot is sufficient to ensure a quality plant is produced.  Your clematis can not always be delivered in full flower, however we will aim to send you the most advanced plant for you so that you get the best display possible in the first year of our plants being in your garden.

Chelsea Chop - Also from time to time we will need to prune plants back to keep them tidy on their cane. While every effort is made to only supply plants in full leaf we may on occasions send plants that have been recently pruned or had leaves removed and will include notes to explain why this has been done.  It's known as the 'Chelsea Chop' and is commonly seen in late May and June.

Please keep in mind that some of the more specialist clematis have different habits, so these standards can vary depending on the type you are buying but it gives you a good guide on what to expect.

From the very outset, the Thorncroft philosophy is to provide a clematis which will thrive for the customer in their garden but also to provide the expert knowledge that we have gained over the years to help advise you which clematis are the best.

We have been sending plants by mail order to customers all over the world and have build up a good knowledge of which plants perform best in various parts of the globe. We also value your experience and if would like to tell us about which clematis you grow in your country, please do, it will allow us to continue learning

Clematis Abundance and Perle d’Azur

I have ordered several clematis plants at different times. All have arrived well packaged with very good care and maintenance notes. The plants have all been very healthy and have subsequently flourished. I cannot find fault with this online nursery and will continue to buy future clematis from them

Have bought years ago from Thorncroft and wasn't disappointed this time either. Well packed and delivered quickly. Such a lovely healthy plant and a good size. Since planting it has already put on growth. Look forward to next year and seeing the flowers. Would recommend 100%.

This is the second clematis I have ordered from Thorncroft -I signed up for an "alert" as I wanted Clematis Abundance that would bring some bright colour to a shady spot. As before, the clematis was speedily delivered and was in perfect condition (very carefully packaged). My Abundance is now waiting to spring into action when the sun appears this year. Thanks for a great service and a lovely plant.

Very pleased with my new clematis. Abundance is a very healthy plant, was well packaged for delivery and came with excellent care instructions. Pictured indoors as we just experienced an extremely cold spell before I could harden it off properly

I thought this was nice in an open garden visit to Brackley.
Bought it from Thorncroft on recommendation from the garden owner and have been very impressed for a first year performance.

Didn't buy this from Thorncroft (I know their's are good plants) but i thought i would review it here cause its a cracking variety.
Easy to grow after planting. just water it for the first year and then let it go.
